The propose of this thesis is to recognize the importance of the Culture education and investigate the ways of teaching American and British culture for effective English language learning and finally look into the reaction of the students having taken the culture lesson through the observation and interview.
Language and Culture are closely related and influence each other. Therefore we should teach not only the language but also the culture. However most of Korean students learning English have no idea that the English learning is closely associated with the Culture learning. So they make much mistakes such as speaking and writing English in the Korean way and transferring of the native language in the wrong way. Even if English sentences made from the students are grammatical, they tend to be inappropriate in the social environment of the English speaking community in many cases. This is mainly due to their lack of the cultural understanding of the target language. Thus Culture teaching of a target language is needed in the EFL classes of Korea.
I have investigated many teaching methods which can be used easily in schools and have executed the Culture lesson to the individual learner of the middle school placed on the beginning stage of the English learning. The study is made up of Pilot-study and Current-study according to the period executed the culture lesson.
The following is the result of this study.
First, most students have a skeptical view about the necessity of the Culture lesson in the English learning though they have lots of interesting in the Culture lesson. This thought causes many learners to regard the Culture lesson as Playing time, not English lesson time. Thus teachers should explain the student a close relationship between the English learning and the culture learning before and after the class.
Second, the type of the early stage English learning focused on the grammar and the reading in the elementary school, especially the fifth and the sixth garde, has caused the English learner in the middle school to the wrong view. In other words the students think the grammar and the reading are everything of the English learning. So Culture learning should be executed from the elementary school.
Third, the Culture lesson which is compromised a language learning with a Culture learning properly seems to be more efficient than that which consist of only culture learning, because the middle school students in the beginning stage of the English learning lack in the thought about the association between the language learning and the Culture learning.
Forth, most students have showed high interesting and concentration to the culture lesson using the Internet. Thus teacher should be satisfied desire and interesting of the students , using various visual and auditory media in the English lesson. In conclusion, English teachers should make efforts to teach American and British culture, keeping in mind that English language learning can be fully accomplished through understanding its cultural background.
