북과 북춤의 시대적 변천에 관한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 우리나라 북과 북춤의 기원과 기능을 밝히고, 원시·상고시대로부터 조선시대까지 시대별로 북춤의 유형을 규명하는데 있다.
연구방법은 1단계 문헌연구로 북과 북춤에 관련된 선행연구 및 논문, 미술사, 음악사 논문 및 저서, 인터넷 검색을 토대로 북과 북춤의 문화적 배경과 북춤에 관하여 시대별로 고찰해 보았다.
2단계에서는 북과 북춤에 관한 사진 및 풍속화자료를 수집하여 그림 삽입을 하였다.
북과 북춤의 문화적 배경에서는 북과 북춤의 기능, 유형이 있으며 북과 북춤의 시대적 변천에서는 원시상고시대의 문화적 배경과 북춤, 그리고 삼국시대, 고려시대, 조선시대의 문화적 배경과 북과 북춤이 있다. 북의 유형은 북이 사용되어지는 것이 종류별로 보면 불교의식에서 치는 북, 무속에서 치는 북, 민속음악에서 치는 북, 궁중에서의 북 등이 있다. 북춤의 유형은 한국전통 무용에서 나타나는 북춤을 유형적 형태로 나누어보면, 불교의식무와 같은 불교적인 성향의 춤, 궁중정재와 지역에 따른 향토적인 민속무용형태 창작무용에서 나타나는 북춤 등이 있다.
북과 북춤의 시대적 특징을 요약하면 다음과 같다.
1. 원시시대에 북과 북춤의 특징은 소리를 내는 것이 시초가 되어 채집과 수렵생활, 원시종교의식에서 기원하고 있으며, 인류의 무속성과 주술적인 제의로 북과 북춤을 추었다. 이런 북의 발달과 함께 새로운 형태의 춤이 등장하는데 이것이 북춤으로써 음악적인 효과와 춤의 요소를 동시에 갖춘 춤이라 할 수 있다.
2. 상고시대 북춤의 특징은 제천의식에 쓰여진 북춤으로 부여의「신맞이 북춤」, 예의「하늘북춤」, 마한의「솟대춤, 소도북춤」등이 있다. 이 시대에 나타나는 북춤은 북을 치며 음식을 장만하여 가무하는 민족의 모습이 중국을 위시한 주변국가에게 상당한 영향을 미쳤으며 중국고대의 문헌을 통해 알 수 있다.
3. 삼국시대의 북과 북춤은 고분벽화에서 행렬의 제일 선두에 북을 세웠고, 전쟁이 있을 시에 승리를 했을 때에도 북을 두드렸다. 삼국시대에는 무엇보다도 외국과의 왕래가 활발하였고, 불교를 받아들여 외국으로부터 새로운 악기를 받아들였으며 그것을 우리 것으로 만들어 더욱 풍성하게 발전시키기도 하였다.
4. 고려시대에는 국교로서 불교의 문화가 주도하였고, 국가의 제전으로 팔관회와 연등회를 들 수 있다.
궁중무에 속하는 고려시대 무고의 경우에도 이미 존재하던 향가의 노랫말과 결부하여 독창적으로 만들어 궁중에서 시연되어 오늘에 이르는 북춤이다.
5. 조선시대 북과 북춤의 특징 중 통영북춤, 날뫼북춤, 밀양오복춤은 그 기원이 서민과 밀접한 연관을 맺고 있는데, 그 뿌리가 민속춤의 농악이나 무속적인 굿에서 나왔음을 알게 되었다.
오랜 수집과 채록을 거쳐 결론에 이른 본 연구는 북과 북춤이 우리의 역사 속에 어떻게 변천되어 왔는지 시대별로 분류하였다. 원시시대부터 조선에 이르기까지의 여러 문헌들을 통하여 다각적으로 연구하였다. 그러나 북을 사용했어도 북춤이 없는 시대에는 유추하여 밝혀낼 수밖에 없었다.
본 연구는 문헌중심이었기 때문에 역사 속에 북춤의 영역은 물증적 자료의 불충분으로 연구가 미흡했으며, 고고학적인 측면에서 유물, 유적을 통한 심층적인 연구도 계속 이루어져야 할 것이다. 그리고 북과 북춤의 시대적 변천이야말로 중요한 과제라고 생각된다. 시대별로 북, 북춤은 철학적, 종교사적 바탕에서 논리적인 규명이 이루어져야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this research is to enlighten the origin and functions of drum and drum dance, and find out the drum dance form in each period from ancient times to Choson Dynasty.
The method of approach in my research is, first, to find and review previous studies and theses on drum and drum dance, and the theses and books on art history and music history, and data on Internet on the cultural background on drum and drum dance in each period. Second, I collected photos and genre painting, and included them on my research paper.
Therere different drums and drum dances according to the different cultural background on each period. In ancient times, there were drums and drum dances according to its culture, and in the Period of the Three States, Koryo Dynasty and Choson Dynasty, there were different drum and drum dance matching each culture.
Also according to their purposes different kinds of drums were used. For example, different shapes of drums were used in Buddhist ceremony, exorcism, folk music, and the Royal Court. And there were also different forms of drum dances: Buddhist drum dances used in Buddhist ceremony, drum dances in each region shown as folk dances, and ones appearing in creative dances.

The summary of drum and drum dances in each period is as follows:
1. In ancient times, drums and drum dances were used to make sound, and they had roles in hunting and religious ceremony. Drum dance was developed later after introduction of drum, and it was a mixture of musical element of drum and dance element.
2. In ancient time, drum dance was used in religious ceremony to worship god. For example, in Buyo Spirit Greeting Drum Dance was performed, and in Ye, Sky Drum Dance , and in Mahan, Sotdae Dance, Sodo Drum Dance were performed. The act of beating drums with prepared foods and dancing influenced neighboring countries, including China, and we can find the evidences of that influences in ancient literatures in China.
3. During the Period of the Three States, according to the wall painting found in tombs during that time, drum preceded all others, and they beat the drums when they won war. There were very active trades with other countries during the Period of the Three States, and Buddhism was imported at that time with new musical instruments, and they were developed Korean styles.
4. During Koryo Dynasty, Buddhism, as a national religion, leaded all cultures, and Palkwanhoi and Yondeunhoi were held as national ceremonies. In case of Moogo, which was a part of the Royal Court dances, it was performed with the lyric of Hyangga in the Royal Court, and it has been developed to todays drum dances.
5. Among the characteristics of the drum and drum dances during Choson Dynasty, the origin of Tongyong drum dance, Nalmoi drum dance, Milyangoh drum dance has close relationships with ordinary people during that time, and I found out that their origin is folk dances, farmers music or exorcism.

In this research, which is done by gathering and recording of data for a long time, I categorized how drums and drum dances have developed in each period. I reviewed many literatures from ancient times to Choson Dynasty in several points of view. There was some period in which there were drums but no drum dances. In that case I had to analogize to find out.

This research is mainly done studying literature, and the research on drum dances was inadequate due to dearth of physical data remaining. And I think there should be more in-depth research on them using relics and remains. Also I think finding out the process of transformation of drum and drum dances following each period is an important task. There should be a logical examination on drums and drum dances in each period based on philosophical and religious history.
