진도 씻김굿의 상징적 특성에 관한 연구 : 지전춤을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

무의(巫儀)를 춤으로 수행시키는 것은 가(歌) 무(舞) 반응의 상징효과를 획득하려는 데 있다. 진도씻김굿 속에 연희(演戱)되는 무무(巫舞)는 제의를 진행함에 있어서 다양한 상징적 기능을 수행할 뿐만 아니라 표현에 있어서도 지극히 예술적이다. 특히 그 속에 연희되는 지전춤은 오늘날 전승되어지고 있는 민속춤에 많은 영향을 주었다.
본 연구는 진도씻김굿 속에서 행해지는 지전춤을 중심으로 그 의미와 상징적 특성을 규명함으로써 무속의 본질과 내용을 올바르게 파악하고 무무(巫舞)의 예술적 가치를 고양시키기 위한 일환으로 시도되었다. 이와 같은 차원에서 본 연구에서 규명하고자 했던 것은 지전춤의 춤사위와 무복 및 무악이 내포하고 있는 상징적 체계분석과 그 의미의 파악에 관한 것이었다.
무속의 역사적 배경과 진도씻김굿의 상징적 대상체에 관한 고찰은 관련 문헌들을 중심으로 한 이차적 문헌들에 근거하였다. 또한 중요무형문화재 제 72호 「진도씻김굿」기능 보유자인 박병천 선생의 일가를 중심으로 행해진 굿 의식의 관찰과 본 연구자가 수강한 3년간의 지전춤 수업에서 체험한 춤사위 교육은 본 연구에서의 핵심내용인 지전춤의 상징적 체계와 의미 규명을 위한 주요 자료였다.
연구문제들과 관련한 다음과 같은 사항들이 본 연구의 결과로서 명료화 되었다:
1) 지전춤의 10가지 춤사위의 형태와 구성에 내포되어 있는 상징적 의미는 망자가 저승으로 가는 길을 극락왕생할 수 있도록 닦아준다는 것이며, 이러한 의식적 행위는 공통적으로 우주만물을 원의 형태로 보고 그 속에 존재하는 모든 액을 지전이라는 상징도구를 통해 직선과 곡선의 X로 막음으로써 ‘액을 막고 살을 푼다’는 형태의 상징체계를 갖고 이루어지고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
2) 지전춤의 무구 무복 및 무악은 춤 수행을 뒷받침하는 보조수단으로써 각자의 독특한 상징적 특성과 예술성을 내포하고 있었다. 지전춤에서 사용되는 무구인 지전은 돈을 상징하는 것으로, 그것은 당골과 망자, 사자, 신(神)의 사이에서 의미를 전달하는 중요한 상징적 부호로 작용하여 의례 제차를 매끄럽게 연결시켜주는 기능을 하고 있었다. 무복은 소박하고 단순하지만 장삼과 고깔, 주홍당사를 착용하는 모습에서 불교적 색채가 짙은 승복과 유사한 점을 찾을 수 있었다. 이는 불교와의 밀접한 관련성이 있음을 시사해주는 것이지만, 외향은 불교적이라 할지라도 그 속에 담겨진 의미는 천신의 성격을 가지고 생산을 주관하는 신을 상징하는 것임을 알 수 있었다. 또한 탁월한 시나위 무속음악(巫俗音樂)의 독특한 장단과 당골의 소리, 악사들에 의한 바라지는 진도씻김굿을 예술성이 뛰어난 굿으로 승화시킬 뿐만 아니라 지전춤을 하나의 독립된 예술작품으로 고양시키는데 중요한 역할을 하고 있었다.
3) 지전춤의 기능적 상징성을 예술적, 사회적 및 종교적 차원으로 분류하여 볼 수 있었다. 첫째, 예술적 차원에서 볼 때, 지전춤은 대칭미, 균형미, 대비미, 조화미, 점층미, 곡선미 등의 다양한 형식미를 보여주고 있었다. 둘째, 사회적 차원에서 볼 때, 굿 속에서 행해지는 당골의 춤을 통한 상징적 의미전달은 사회구성원의 다양한 정서와 다원적인 삶을 포괄하면서 굿판(現場)에서 무당과 민중이 역사와 체험을 공유하는 기능을 부여하고 있었다. 셋째, 종교적 차원에서 볼 때, 지전춤은 제의적, 축귀적, 축원적 기능을 내포하고 있었다.
결론적으로 볼 때, 진도씻김굿과 지전춤의 올바른 의미해석과 변형되지 않은 고유의 춤사위를 분석하여 상징성과 의미를 규명한 것은 보다 체계적인 전통문화예술 계승과 재창조 작업을 위한 노력의 일환이 될 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

To perform shaman ritual through a dance aims at obtaining symbolic effects of songs and dances reactions. As shaman dance has been proceeding, Shaman dance performed in Jin-do ssitgimgut carries out not only various symbolic functions but also is expressed awfully artistically. Especially Ji-jeon dance, a part of ssitgimgut has quite a few effects on folk dances which are handed down until now.
This study was tried to understand correctly what nature and content of shaman ritual are throughout clarifying the meaning and symbolic character and to cultivate the artistic value of shaman dance. In the view of these points , what I try to clarify in this study is to understand the meaning and analysis of symbolic systems.
The consideration about the historic background and symbolic exorcism of Jin-do ssitgimgut is based on the secondary documents of the related records. Also the principle materials for clarifying the meaning and symbolic system are the period when I had watched the exorcism ritual performed by Park Byungchun who is an intangible cultural properties No.72 and his family and I had experienced the course of dance formation and order since I has been taught for 3 years.
The relevant matters of this study can be proved as follows.
1) The symbolic meaning involved in 10 forms and composition of Ji-jeon dance is to pray an easy and peaceful death for the dead and to help him to go to heaven, and this ritual performance can be made up of as the symbolic system which drive out a misfortune and exorcise an evil spirit by stopping it with an X of direct and curved line through the symbolic tools of Jijeon.
2) The dance equipment, dance clothes and dance music of Ji-jeon is involved the artistic value and peculiar symbolic character of each of them as auxiliary resources. The dance equipment, Ji-jeon means paper money and it plays a role in connecting the ritual procedure softly as the important symbolic marks for transferring meanings among Dangol(exorcist), the dead, the deceaseds guide, and the god.
Though the dance clothes are plain and simple, it can be founded out the similar points in the feature of wearing Jangsam. Gokkal and Juhongdangsa. It suggests the close relevant to Buddism, however, the meaning in it represents the god who is a representative of all other gods and supervises production. The sound of Dangol and Barage by musicians has played an important role in cultivating Jijeon dance as one of a separate art as well as sublime an excellent work of art.
3) The functional symbol of Jijeon dance can be assorted in fields of art, society and religion. Fist, in terms of art field, it can be seen various beauty of form such as a beauty of symmetry, a beauty of balance, a beauty of comparison, a beauty of harmony, a beauty of gradation and a beauty of curved line. Second, in terms of society. the communication of symbolic meaning performed in gut through Dangols dance can contain various emotion and multiple life and endow an exorcist and the popular people with the function of sharing history and experience. Third, in terms of religion, Jijeon contains the functions of performing shaman ritual, driving out an evil spirit and blessing for god.
In conclusion, the clarification of the symbol and meaning of Jijeon dance by analysing the forms of original dance which is not changed now and the correct interpretation of the meaning can be one of efforts to succession and recreation of the cultural heritage more systematically.
