Recently, as there is no difference in the quality of most products between competitive products from the viewpoint of their functions, many companies have strengthened their brand as a source of differentiation strategies. From this point of view, the importance of brand personality has been extended. Brand personality is a part of brand identity, and can be based on differentiation from competitive brands.
Objectives of this study are as follows; First, this study is to collect personality factors of the subject brands to compare from the same product group and to supply useful information and suggestions for establishment of brand marketing strategies.
Second, with the empirical examination about whether self-congruity between brand personality and self-image has significant influence on an attitude toward brand, this study is to supply useful suggestions in establishing marketing strategies for consumers, who intend to pursue symbolic and emotional benefits from products or brands.
As a result of an empirical analysis, the findings of this study are as follows. First, as a result of collecting personality factors of the subject brands to compare, it was shown that the particular personality factor has been evaluated higher than other factors by each brand.
Second, as a result of analyzing effects of self-congruity between brand personality and self-image on the attitude toward brand, it was verified that the positive attitude toward brand was formed when self-congruity between brand personality and self-image was perceived highly.
Third, with respect to the relative impact of self-congruity between functional attributes and self of brand on the attitude toward brand, it was verified that the agreement with self had higher influence on the attitude toward brand.
Finally, as a result of analyzing the relations between the attitude toward brand and intention to purchase, it was verified that consumers had an intention to re-purchase positively when they were favorably disposed toward the brand.
Suggestions of this study are as follows. First, brand personality is an element of brand identity, and can be a source of differentiation from competitive brands. Therefore, concerning the establishment of marketing strategies, the findings of this study suggest, on which aspect of brand personality should be focused, in implementing a differentiation marketing-program in detail.
Second, it is expected that marketers will respond effectively to the trend, which symbolic use and emotional consumption are strengthened, by emphasizing the self-congruity between self-image of the target consumers and brand personality of the relevant company. Accordingly, it will allow consumers to take a favorable stand on brand, and lead a practical decision making for purchase.
