The aim of this study was to examine the effects of group game-play on executive function, impulsivity, self-control and overt self-control behavior of ADHD children.
Twelve-3rd and 4th grade elementary school student(10 boys and 2 girls) participated in the group game-play. Abbreviated Conners Parent Rating Scale-Revised(ACPRS) and Korean Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-III (K-WISC-111) were used as subject selection evaluation. The subjects were assigned into either experimental group or control group by matching with results of selection evaluation.
The pre-post test scales used in this study were ADHD Diagnostic System(ADS), Stroop Test, Fluency Test, Trail Making Test for measuring executive function, Matching Familiar Figuar Test(MFFT) for impulsivity, Self-Control Rating Scale(SCRS) and Behavior Observation Rating Scale(BORS) for overt self-control.
To analyze the results, two - way ANOVAs with a repeated measure(test-time) and simple main effect test as a post hoc comparison were conducted by using SAS 8.0(ed).
The results of this study were as follows;
First, group game-play had positive effects on executive function of ADHD children. The subjects of the experimental group performed significantly better than those of the control group on most of the executive function post tests.
These positive effects showed on inattention, correct reaction time, average time of reaction time complex-letter(error frequency), letter(reaction time), color(reaction time), complex-color(reaction time) of Stroop Test, B type(error frequency) of Trail Making Test, Fluency Test, but there were no positive effects on impulsivity of ADS, letter(error frequency), color(error frequency) complex-color(error frequency) of Stroop Test, A type(error frequency, reaction time) and B type(reaction time) of Trail Making Test.
Second, group game-play had positive effects on decreasing impulsivity of ADHD children. The experimental group showed significantly lower impulsivity score than the control group.
Third, group game-play had positive effects on self-control of ADHD children. The experimental group performed significantly better than the control group on the self-control post tests.
Fourth, group game-play had positive effects on changing behavior of ADHD children. The experimental group performed significantly better than the control group on post observations of self-control behavior.
In conclusion, the group game-play was effective for improving executive function, impulsivity, self-control and overt self-control behavior of ADHD children. Specifically, planning, making strategies, problem solving, cognitive and behavioral inhibition in game-play influenced executive function, impulsivity, self-control and overt self-control behavior of ADHD children.
