This study is the descriptive correlation survey for the purpose of providing the basic data that establishes the family-centered nursing strategies to promote adolescents' hope by researching relation between family function and hope in adolescents.
The subjects for this study were 1030 students of high school located in J city. 995 completed questionnaires were used for this study except insufficient or inappropriate answers. The data were obtained by the questionnaire from the 1st to 20th of December in 2003.
The research instrument for measuring family function is FAD developed by Epstein et al., which Chung has translated and used for her research. This researcher modified her translated version to suit the standard of adolescents. Hope was measured by the questionnaire that has been developed by Miller and translated by Lim(1992).
The collected data were analyzed with SPSS PC for windows(version 10.0). The general characteristics were represented by frequency and percentage, and the level of family function and hope by the minimum value, the maximum value, mean score and mean grade. The relation between family function and hope adolescents was analyzed by using Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. The level of family function and hope by general characteristics were examined by t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe test.
The results of the study were as follows:
1. The level of adolescents' family function ranged from 26 to 97, the mean score was 66.85±13.16 and the mean grade was 2.76±0.52.
2. The level of adolescents' hope ranged from 55 to 153, the mean score was 111.48±17.64 and the mean grade was 2.78±0.44.
3. It showed that there is significantly positive correlations(r=0.546, p=.000) between adolescents' family function and hope. That is to say, the better family function adolescents have, the higher the level of hope gets.
4. The family function by adolescents' general character showed the significant difference by school record(F=6.363, p=.002), school life satisfaction(F=4.922, p=.007), father's education(F=2.640, p=.048), mother's education(F=3.586, p=.013), and domestic economy status(F=3.022, p=.049).
5. The hope by adolescents' general character showed the significant difference by religion(t=2.018, p=.044), school type(t=2.567, p=.010), school record(F=9.712, p=.000), school life satisfaction(F=11.367, p=.000), father's education(F=4.632, p=.003), mother's education(F=4.709, p=.003), domestic economy status(F=4.235, p=.015), relationship with friends(F=8.187, p=.000), and subjective health condition(F=5.490, p=.001).
The above results show the fact that nurses should provide nursing care including encouragement of hope to adolescents who aware of lower hope with nursing intervention which improves family function at clinic or in a community.
On the basis of the above findings, the following recommendations are made:
First, family function and hope in adolescents are related closely, so the development of nursing intervention should be made and applied studies should be conducted in order to improve family function which encourages hope to adolescents.
Second, assessment instruments are required to evaluate Korean adolescents' family function and hope
Third, studies on adolescents in a special situation such as disease, drug abuse, and juvenile delinquent are needed to find their family function and hope.
