This study is designed to understand that group counseling for self-development has effects on improving self-esteem and sociality of middle school student. To achieve the purpose of the study, it is established subjects of study as follows.
First, has the group counseling program for self-development influenced on improvement of self-esteem of student?
Second, is it possible to effect on improvement of sociality of student?
Two groups pretest-posttest experimentation design was used to test the hypotheses. Twenty-four students selected as subjects among the 3rd grade of the middle school located in Cheong-ju, Chung-buk Province, it is divided into experimental-group of 12 students and control-group of the rest 12. It performed total 10 sessions of 60-90minutes, by doing it 1-2time a week with experimental-group, based on the self-development program making up for a self-development program that is developed by Lee, Hyung-Duik(1998). In control group, it is done only preliminary and post examination.
As a examination tool to verify hypotheses of the study, it is used sociality examintion tool by Lee, Sung-Hyun(1997). It consists of items for sociality measurements that is selected both out self-esteem examination developed by Choi, Bo-Ga and Jeon, Gui-Yeon(1993) based on the studies such as those of Coopersmith(1967), McChale, and Chaighed(1988), etc. and character inventory for elementary school by Jeong, Bum,-Mo(1971).
The date processing of this study was analyzed with a statistics program SPSS/WIN10.0.
The t-verification was executed to compare the difference of self-esteem between the experimental group and control group before and after the group counseling, and it verified significant difference in the meaningful level p<.05. And the t-verification was executed to compare the difference of sociality between the experimental group and control group before and after the group counseling, and it verified significant difference in the meaningful level p<.01
Through the above proceedures, this study was conclude as follows:
First, the self-development program is effective in improving the self-esteem of middle school students.
Second, the self-development program is effective in improving the sociality of middle school students.
Based on the above findings, it leads to conclusions that group counseling program of self-development has positive effects on self-esteem and sociality of middle school student.
Therefore, for the improvement of self-esteem and sociality of young students, we need more efforts to provide experience of self-development program and lead the young students to form a right humanity
