지역 사회 봉사 활동이 공동체 의식과 참여 의식 함양에 미치는 효과

This study investigated whether community service has effect on the cultivation of the senses of community and participation. The ultimate goal of social studies is the cultivation of citizenship. Thus, it is very important to study an effective teaching-leaning method for the cultivation of citizenship. In this regard, although scholars have somewhat different answers to what method is most effective to educate citizenship, most of them refer to learning through democratic experiences. The contents mainly discussed as an effective method to educate citizenship are that what should be emphasized is the importance of community as a place for citizenship
education and participation in public affairs as a method to educate citizenship. From this aspect, community service program, which leads learning through service activities in communities, is closely related to social studies that is purposed to the cultivation of citizenship.
As a method of citizen participation in the recent society, there is also a growing interest in community service as an effective teaching-learning method for the cultivation of citizenship and practice according to it in social studies, which is based on a variety of evidence that there are educational effects for students through community service. Many studies that have so far been made on community service report that as the result of operating community service integrated with educational curriculums in various areas, community service brings academic, individual and social growth and development to students and is especially effective for forming civic values and attitudes.
Based on this, this study set up two hypotheses and continued research as follows. First, the sense of community of the students who did community service which was planned, intended and made through the class of social studies would be higher than that of those who did not community service which was planned, intended and made through the class of social studies. Second, the sense of participation of the students who did community service which was planned, intended and made through the class of social studies would be higher than that of those who did not community service which was planned, intended and made through the class of social studies.
As the results of the study, all of the hypotheses that were intended to verify in this study were verified. Therefore, it was proved in this study that community service has effect on the cultivation of the senses of community and participation which are important factors of citizenship. Accordingly, it was shown that community service can be used as a teaching-learning method in social studies of which the ultimate goal is the cultivation of citizenship.
However, this study has its own limitation. First, the study period was not sufficient to investigate the effect of community service. Second, there is lack of connection between school and community. In the future, service is expected to occupy a great deal of weight on civic life. In this situation, it is necessary to try to see students' service from the aspect of learning and make educational use of it meaningfully. For this, the followings should be prepared. First, as service is seen as learning, it is required to develop a service program well integrated with the contents of social studies within the curriculum. Second, school and community should cooperate with each other closely. When service is made effectively under the cooperation between school and community, all school, community and students can gain various benefits through service. In particular, social studies, which has the goal to bring up great citizens in a democratic society, needs to provide students with opportunities to have many experiences of participation in community. In this regard, community service will provide such opportunities for them.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 지역 사회 봉사 활동이 공동체 의식과 참여 의식 함양에 효과가 있는가를 알아보았다. 사회과 교육의 궁극적인 목표는 시민성 함양이다. 따라서 시민성 함양을 위한 효과적인 교수·학습 방안에 대한 연구는 매우 중요하다. 이 때 시민성을 어떠한 방법으로 교육 하는 것이 가장 효과적인가에 대한 대답은 학자들에 따라 약간씩의 차이가 있기는 하지만 대부분의 학자들은 민주적인 경험을 통한 학습을 이야기한다. 효과적인 시민성 교육 방법으로 주로 논의되고 있는 내용은 시민성 교육의 장으로서 지역 사회의 중요성, 시민성 교육 방법으로서 공공 문제에의 참여가 강조되어야 한다는 것이다. 이런 측면에서 보면 지역 사회에서의 봉사 활동을 통해 학습을 유도하는 지역 사회 봉사 활동 프로그램이 시민성 함양을 목적으로 하는 사회과 교육과 매우 밀접한 관련을 가진다고 할 수 있다.
최근 사회에서 시민 참여의 한 방법으로서, 사회과 교육에서도 시민성 함양을 위한 효과적인 교수·학습 방법의 하나로서 지역 사회 봉사 활동에 대한 관심과 그에 따른 실천이 증가하고 있는데, 이는 지역 사회 봉사 활동을 통해 학생들에게 교육적인 효과가 나타난다는 여러 증거들에 기초하고 있다. 지금까지 지역 사회 봉사 활동에 대한 많은 연구들은, 지역 사회 봉사 활동을 다양한 분야의 교육 과정과 통합 운영해 본 결과, 지역 사회 봉사 활동이 학생의 학문적, 개인적, 사회적 성장과 발전을 가져오고 특히 시민적 가치와 태도 형성에 효과적이라고 보고하고 있다.
이를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 다음과 같은 두 가지 가설을 설정하고 연구를 진행하였다. 첫째, 지역 사회 봉사 활동은 학생들의 공동체 의식을 높여줄 것이다. 둘째, 지역 사회 봉사 활동은 학생들의 참여 의식을 높여줄 것이다. 단, 여기서 지역 사회 봉사 활동은 시민성 함양을 목표로 사회 수업 시간을 통하여 계획되고 의도된 활동을 의미한다.
연구 결과, 본 연구에서 검증하고자 한, 두 가지 가설이 모두 검증되었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 지역 사회 봉사 활동이 시민성의 중요한 요소인 공동체 의식과 참여 의식 함양에 영향을 미친다는 것이 검증되었다. 이로써 지역 사회 봉사 활동을 시민성 함양을 궁극적 목표로 하는 사회과에서 사회과 교수·학습 방법으로 활용될 수 있음을 보여주었다.
하지만, 본 연구는 나름대로의 한계를 가지고 있다. 첫째, 지역 사회 봉사 활동의 효과를 알아보기 연구 기간이 충분하지 않았다. 둘째, 학교와 지역 사회와의 연계가 부족했다. 앞으로 봉사 활동은 시민 생활에서 큰 비중을 차지하게 될 것으로 예상된다. 이런 상황에서 학생들의 봉사 활동을 학습 측면에서 바라보고 교육적으로 의미 있게 활용하려는 노력이 필요하다. 이를 위해서는 다음과 같은 점들이 준비되어야 한다. 첫째, 학생들의 봉사 활동을 학습이라는 관점에서 바라보면서 사회과 교육 과정 안에서 사회과 내용과 잘 통합된 활동 프로그램이 개발되어야 한다. 둘째, 학교와 지역 사회의 긴밀한 협조가 이루어져야 한다. 학교와 지역 사회의 협력 하에 봉사 활동이 잘 이루어지면 학교와 지역 사회, 학생 모두가 봉사 활동을 통해 여러 가지 이점을 얻을 수 있다. 특히 민주 사회의 훌륭한 시민을 키워내는 것을 목표로 하는 사회과에서는 학생들이 지역 사회에서 참여 경험을 많이 할 수 있도록 기회를 제공해 주어야 하고, 지역 사회 봉사 활동은 그런 기회를 제공해 줄 것이다.
