In this study, comparing third and fourth grade with fifth and sixth grade in elementry school, we are to know that how the self-esteem of the children affects to adaptation to the school life and what the developmental difference between the self-esteem and adaptation to the school life is, as the grade goes up.
These below are the hypothesis.
Initially, it may have static correlation between self-esteem and adaptation to the school life of children.
Secondly, as the grade goes up, there may be difference between self-esteem and adaptation to the school life of children.
Finally, there may be difference between self-esteem and adaptation to the school life of children concerning to the background variable of population statistics.
A survey was done to the children in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade at three schools in Seoul to be sure of the hypothesis above from May, fourth, 2005 to May, ninth, 2005. And Frequency analysis, T-test, Correlation analysis, and ANOVA were applied to the questionnaire that was submitted from the subjects.
the results of this study are like these
Firstly, there is static meaningful correlation between self-esteem and adaptation to the school life of children. In addition, there is static correlation between sub-field of self-esteem and adaptation to the school life of children. That means the higher the self-esteem is, the better the probability of children's adaption to the school is.
Secondly, the result shows that the children in the third and fourth grade who don't reach the age of puberty have higher self-esteem than the children in the fifth and sixth grade. Especially, there is meaningful difference as to the self-esteem of physical ability, appearance, scholar, personality, and family. Moreover, even though there is subtle difference to the adaptation to the school life of children, the relationship between friends, school lesson, and school rules of the children in the third and fourth grade are higher than those of the children in the fifth and sixth grade.
Thirdly, examining the difference of self-esteem as to the background variable of population statistics, the only child has higher self-esteem than the child who has brothers or sisters. As the parents' academic background and the domestic circumstances are better, the children has higher self-esteem than those who are not. As to the adaptation to the school life of children, girls are faster to adapt to the school life than boys. In addition, the better the domestic circumstances and the parents' academic background are, the faster the adaptation to the school life of children is. And the children who are living with both of their own parents have higher self-esteem and are faster to adapt to the school life than those who are under their lone mother or father and those who are under divorced family.
The conclusion is that the self-esteem of children affects to the adaptation to the school life of them. We are able to find out the self-esteem and the adaptation to the school life of the children in the fifth and sixth grade who reach the age of puberty become lower .
Therefore, the parents or the teachers who are in charge of high grade children in elementary school should be concerned about the change of the children who are in puberty so as to foster their self-esteem. And basically, it can lead the children in the age of puberty to rapid adaptation to the school life.
