The purpose of this study was to review the elderly people''''''''''''''''s death in its social welfare aspects and thereby, understand their thoughts about death and find some ways how to educate them on death. For this purpose, the researcher examined how such an education affect the elderly and how much such an education is required in the social welfare services.
Thus, the researcher reviewed the needs for the education on death based on elderly people''''''''''''''''s thoughts about death and their attitudes towards death.
Korea will advance into a super-aged society by 2026. Therefore, the elderly who should always be aware of their death are required to overcome the inevitable or possible loss of control, dependency, emotional and behavioral changes caused by the emotional alienation. So, it is urgently required to explore the ways for them to counter such emotional problems involving death and encourage them to be positive towards their death. In this context, this study aimed to review the effects of a spiritual ego matured socio-psychologically on attitude towards death, and confirm the need for education on death.
First, as a theoretical background of this study, the researcher reviewed concepts of aging, theories about aging and social problems involving aging. Then, the researcher examined the meanings of death, and the history of death in terms of how it has been accepted by period. Then, the processes of accepting death were discussed, and philosophical, religious and psychological viewpoints of death were reviewed, and awareness of death and religious attitudes towards death were discussed. Lastly, the researcher examined what is good death from elderly people''''s perspective, and reflected on need and importance of an education on death.
In conclusion, the elderly fear their death more than other age groups, and are aware of their death through close relatives'''''''''''''''' or friends'''''''''''''''' death. Most of the elderly wish that they would meet death before their grown-up children and go to the heaven. And the elderly want to be educated on death in order to meet such a good death. Therefore, it was confirmed through this study that an education on death is absolutely required and the education may well include some religious education. The practical educations to help them meet their death comfortably are healthy life and natural death, education for enhancement of life quality, and financial preparation for death.
And the education on death for the elderly should handle both death and life, and the social welfare specialists should enhance their professionalism to be informed of the education on death, while participating in such an education. Of course, the government is obliged to support such an education programs financially, pedagogically and emotionally.
