Children change all aspects of their body, emotion, sociality, and awareness as time passes, never stopping, through adulthood into death. This change is called development. The development of a child shows various stages of development in different aspects of body, emotion, sociality, and awareness, so it is important to offer experiences which correspond with characteristics of the appropriate development age for the child. Further, it is important to offer experiences which correspond with characteristics of the development level for the individual child.
This study tried to demonstrate the affirmative influence about figure concepts in field of recognition of children through offering an art activity which corresponds with the development level of children in babyhood. The offered art activity is the application of collage technique, which means "paste", wherein the children utilize many different objects, such as prints, clothes, metal objects, sand, wood pieces, and leaves. This, along with the making of models, is one of the formative activities.
These formative activities offer the chance to express the child's mind and inner world, and the experience of various expression methods helps the spiritual and physical development of the child.
In this study, I drew up a lesson plan about formative activities which applied paste, rip, cut, and formation and applied this study in art activities of children who were 5 years old. I considered recognition and changes in figure recognition ability and tried to discover a difference of figure recognition ability between boys and girls.
For this, I considered the influence that art activities which utilize collage technique have on the development of figure concepts on the basis of the theoretical background about a child's recognition development, collage activity, and figure concepts.
To draw up the lesson plan, I organized the lesson course on the basis of a basic collage activity guide, which is from a children's art program. To begin the study, I chose 30 children as an experiment group and another 29 as a comparison group. The subjects were children in kindergarten in Seoul, ages 4-7. I used a child intelligence test, developed by Dr. Kim, Jae-Eun at Ewha University, Education Psychology, College of Education. One aspect of this test was the "fixed into square and modeling after a pattern test", which is a field test of S- space ability and figure ability, to which would be able to estimate the basic figure ability of the subjects.
The art activity program which was applied to the experiment group utilized the collage technique, consisting of division of figure shapes, naming the figures, classifying the difference between figures, and construction of figures and direct expression.
I was able to get the results of following through this study.
A difference of space and figure concepts between the two groups of this study was discovered. The group of children who experienced the art activity program which utilized collage technique improved their space and figure concepts more than the comparison group. It can be said that the children in the experiment group improved their space and figure concepts through art activity which was utilized because they could experience each level's aspect, which were naming the figures, classifying the difference between figures, and construction of figures using the collage technique and direct expression much more than the comparison group.
However, the study did not discover a difference about figure recognition ability between boys and girls.
It was demonstrated that an art activity program which applied the collage technique has an effect on the development of a child's figure recognition ability.
