The purpose of this study is to understand the factors that effect a child’s social competency. The secondary purpose of the study is to make a contribution in providing specific knowledge to parents, educators, and to intervention program developers who wish to assist children with low social competency.
The research subjects of this study were 116 five and six year old children and their mothers residing in Daejeon , selected from three private preschools, and 2 public day care centers.
To measure the social competency of children, from the six child development scale of NICHD Early Child Care Research Network (1996) and Peisner-Feinberg and Burchinal (1997), the social competency scale adapted by Lee Young and Kim Myungsoon were selected and utilized. In order to measure the emotionality of the children, portions of Rothbart’s Child Behavior Questionnaire (1690) adapted and adjusted by Gwon Yeunhee was utilized.
In order to understand the demographic background of the test subjects, average, frequency and percentiles were calculated. In addition, based on the mother’s education, employment, and monthly income, means and standard deviations were calculated for each variable, and used the t-test and the F-test to verify the difference in the results. Pearson’s Correlation analysis was used to measure the correlation between children’s emotionality and their social competency, and to verify the degree of influence emotionality has on social competency, a regression analysis was conducted.
The results of the study are as follows.
First, there were significant difference in social competency based on sex of the child; however, the demographic background of the mother did not have a significant effect on the child’s social competency.
Second, statistically, positive emotionality was significantly higher in boys than in girls and mother’s demographic background did not play a significant role on the child’s negative emotionality. The emotionality of children are inborn and genetically inherited, therefore, social demographics does not appear to have significant effect.
Third, the more negative attitudes a child displays, the lower were their social competency. Of the four areas of child’s emotionality, those playing a role in influencing the child’s social skills and development were found to be Anger/Despair emotions which are sub categories of negative attitudes.
