This study has focused on adolescents rather than housewives or children as the subjects of domestic abuse and studied what sorts of effects a history of being abused has on their adjustment to school. The aims of the study are to raise the awareness in terms of the seriousness of domestic violence especially on adolescents and to find out what socio-demographic variables and verbal and physical abuse have to do with adolescents' adjustment to school. It also aims to understand the subtypes of social support and to demonstrate the effectiveness of social support as coping resources for abused adolescents by studying the correlation between social support as a variable and the teenagers' adjustment to school. Furthermore, this study intends to present to social workers for schools a reason for establishing intervention strategies to resolve the adolescents' adjustment issues.
The research survey was conducted in the form of a self-report questionnaire on 279 middle school students of the D and S areas in Seoul. Collected data were analyzed by using SPSS 10.0 for t-test, Pearson's correlation, reliability analysis, and multiple regression. The major findings of this study are as follows:
First of all, compared the characteristics of the teenagers who had a history of being abused with those of the teenagers who didn't, the study has found that abused teenagers were more likely to think their parents' financial status was relatively high while they showed lower levels of an understanding on their levels of adjustment to school and social support.
Secondly, it has been indicated that abuse had a negative effect on teenagers' adjustment to school. Moreover, verbal abuse was found to have a more negative effect on them than physical abuse.
Thirdly, the research has found that social support had a positive effect on the abused adolescents' adjustment to school. Especially, support from their teachers was indicated to have the greatest impact of all.
Fourthly, it was found that support from family members, friends and teachers all had positive effects on the teenagers' adjustment to school. However, the research findings have shown that support from teachers had no effects on the teenagers' attitude towards academic achievement among the other subtypes of adjustment to school.
Fifthly, social support was found to have meaningful and affective effects on abused teenagers' adjustment to school. The result suggests that social support has a crucial effect on the adjustment issue.
Finally, the research has found that there were no buffering effects of social support when it comes to the effects of social support on helping the teenagers to overcome the experiences of being abused. That is, abuse has negative effects on teenagers, however, social support cannot serve as a buffering effect to minimize the negative effects caused by abuse.
Thus far, the research findings suggest that it is urgent to find abused adolescents as early as possible and to intervene to help them since a history of being abused has negative effects on their adjustment to school. Moreover, the research has indicated that social support was likely to ease the abused teenagers' difficulties in adjusting themselves to school, which were caused by a history of being abused. For this reason, it is required that various resources, such as family members, friends and teachers need to be effectively made use of in the process of interventions to help the abused adolescents to get on with school.
