The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship among family function, peer variable and self-esteem. In this paper, family variable is family function which shows the dynamic interaction among families including a child. It is divided among family cohesion, family adaptability and family type of organization. Peer variable is divided into social preference and peer position. I searched the relationship among family variable, peer variable and the sub realm of self-esteem.
This study carried out a research into 376 6th-grade students in Gangbuk area of Seoul city with FACESⅢ invented by Olson in 1985, social survey test - the index of the peer relation developed by Coie in 1982 and self-esteem test for children developed by Hare in 1985.
The following results were reached during this study. They are as follows:
First, family function and peer relation shows no correlated relations.
Second, for each family cohesion, family adaptability, family type of organization describing family function shows meaningful differences. The more the level of family cohesion and family adaptability is high, the more children's self-esteem is high.
Third, looking into classified results according to children's perception of the level of family cohesion and adaptability, middle-ranged family, rather balanced family, extreme family and balanced family showed much children's self-esteem in sequence.
Fourth, self-esteem in a peer group shows meaningful differences between the group of popular children and the group of unpopular one. That is to say, children build up the feeling of capability and think of themselves as valuable ones as they have positive relations with the peer group.
Fifth, family function and children's self-esteem show correlated relations and peer relation has correlated relations with self-esteem. Between family function and peer relation, family cohesion is the highest rate of contribution to children's self-esteem. The next one is peer relation.
The conclusions of this study give important suggestions to give instructions to children's parents in school field and suggest the necessity of education and counseling for unpopular or denied children in peer relation.
Therefore, this study presents the relationship of family function, peer relation and self-esteem and explains the fact that family atmosphere is more important than any other social surroundings in a pre-adolescent period.
