The purpose of this study is to find out the relationship between self-esteem and the levels of stress elementary school children.
Specific research questions are as follows.
First, is there any difference in elementary school children's self-esteem according to the disparity in grade or gender gap?
Second, is there any difference in elementary school children's levels of stress according to the disparity in grade or gender gap?
Third, is there any difference in elementary school children's levels of stress according to the degree of their self-esteem?
In order to verify these research questions, I tested first, third and fifth graders at O elementary school located in Gangnam-Gu, Seoul for the degrees of self-esteem and the levels of stress. I ranked the result of the self-esteem test according to the score in classifying into three groups as high(25.4%), mid-range(49.5%), and low(25.1%) on the basis of the value of high ranked 25% and low ranked 25%.
I used 2 kinds of inventories. One of them is SEI(Self-esteem inventory) designed by Coopersmith, which was used to view self-esteem level by Kim, YangSook(1995) in Korea. It contained A, B type tests, and I used the B type test in this research because that is for children. In order to see the levels of stress, I set out questionnaire divided into six categories - parents, family, friends, study(school work), teachers in school and surroundings. This questionnaire was designed by Han, MiHyun and Yoo, AnJin(1995). This is the other.
I analyzed the statistics to verify research questions using collected data. I used one way ANOVA and T-test to see the difference between self-esteem and stress level according to the disparity in grade or gender gap. And I conducted cross-analysis to see self-esteem levels according to the disparity in grade or gender gap and also conducted correlation analysis in order to examine the relationship between self-esteem and the levels of stress according to them. Empirical analysis of this research was examined within level of significance P<.05. The program SPSSWIN 11.0 was used to analyze statistical procedure.
The results of analysis are as follows:
First, I found out that the first graders' self-esteem level is highest among them and that female children's self-esteem level is higher than male children's. As children move up higher grades, their self-esteem level becomes lower and, especially, female children's self-esteem level is higher than male children's in the first grade rather than in the third and fifth grade.
Second, the results show that third graders are more get stressed than other graders and first graders are get stressed less than others. Stress level according to the sexual distinction shows that female children's stress level is a little bit higher than male children's related with parents, friends, and surroundings, but there's little significant difference.
Third, the levels of stress related to the degree of self-esteem divided by three groups is the highest in the low self-esteem groups, and there is a statistically significant difference in stress level related with parents, family, friends, teachers, study and surroundings(P<.001). This result shows that students who have high self-esteem level experience less get stressed than the others.
