국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 정교분리에 대한 한국시민들의 인식과 태도를 결정하는 요인을 규명하려는 것이다. 세계가치조사를 이용한 분석 결과, 이 연구는 민주화 이후 정교분리에 대한 한국인들의 지지 수준은 매우 높았으며, 민주주의를 중시하는 이들일수록 종교의 정치적 영향력을 제한해야 한다는 정교분리주의에 대하여 긍정적이라는 점을 밝혔다. 이에 반해, 신앙심과 함께 교회에 대한 신뢰와 사회문제에 대한 종교의 해결능력에 대한 긍정적 평가가 정교분리에 대한 지지를 약화시킨다는 점을 밝혔다. 이는 한국인들이 정교분리를 민주주의의 핵심가치로 여기고 있다는 사실과 함께, 종교인들이 얼마나 종교의 내재적 가치뿐만 아니라 외재적 가치를 재생산할 수 있느냐에 따라 이들의 정치참여에 대한 지지수준이 달라질 수 있음을 보여주는 것이다. 저자는 민주적 정교분리의 원칙이 단순히 정치의 영역에서 종교를 배제하는 것을 의미하는 것은 아니며, 국가와 종교의 경계에 대한 사회적 합의가 민주주의의 심화를 위해 필요하다고 주장한다.

This study is an effort to examine the public perception of the state-religion relationship and its determinants in Korea. Analyzing the World Value Survey series, this study shows that most Koreans support separationism. In addition, it shows that, on the one hand, strong advocates of democracy are more likely to support separationism. On the other hand, those who have robust religiosity, trust in church, and positive evaluation of social contributions of the church are less likely to support separationism. These results imply that most Koreans regard separationism as a core value of democracy, and that public support for separationism depends on the diverse intrinsic and extrinsic values of religion. The author claims that separationism cannot be equated with political exclusivism, and that building social consensus for the relationship between state and religion is required for deepening democracy.
