In modern times, a new trend of dancing in bigger movements and seeking new dance styles has evolved. As a result, dancers must now learn additional, new techniques to cope with this trend. Furthermore, since these new techniques require more and often different types of movement, dancers have searched for new methods to condition their bodies so they can more easily learn new types of dance. Body conditioning helps dancers utilize their techniques to a full extent by training them to be physically strong and fit. Also, a stronger body enables dancers to figure out solutions more quickly when learning new dance techniques thereby allowing for faster comprehension of the techniques. Ultimately, body conditioning is essential to dancers not only for improving their dance performance but also for maintaining their physical health. One form of body conditioning is `Pilates` developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates. This body conditioning emphasizes six theories: Concentration, control, centering, flowing movement, precision, and breathing. This particular body conditioning focuses on strengthening the core muscles in the body as well as harmonizing psychological and physical conditions. However, since there is a lack of systematic instruction for Pilates, people have discovered that it has been extremely difficult to understand the full concept of Pilates. Furthermore, when described in words, the Pilates instruction fails to explain how each movement is supposed to be performed. In order to provide a clear and concrete concept of Pilates, this study will look at the Pilates instruction basing on Laban Movement Analysis(LMA). Briefly, Laban Movement Analysis analyzes human movement scientifically and objectively, relating to Body, Effort, Shape, and Space(BESS). The characteristics of the Pilates instruction that suggest 16 movements of Pilates on the basis of BESS are as follows: While practicing Pilates, `how` to perform each movement suggested in Laban Movement Analysis can be clearly expressed. Since the Pilates instruction that is based on BESS movement theory of Laban Movement Analysis described in such a perspicuous manner, the learning process will proceed more effectively. In other words, Laban`s teaching allows dancers to absorb the lesson with less difficulty and express each characteristic of the movement to a full extent. In conclusion, this study suggests that the Pilates instruction based on BESS movement theory of Laban Movement Analysis should become more systematic and be directly applied to classes so that its efficiency can be verified.
