그림책에서 의인화된 동물 등장인물에 대한 아동의 반응 = Children`s Response to Animal Characters in Picturebooks

국문 초록 (Abstract)

동물 주인공은 아동문학의 가장 중요한 특징이다. 아동문학에서의 성격 묘사는 다양하게 이루어지나 동물이 의인화될 때 작가는 등장인물의 성, 연령, 사회적, 지위 등과 같은 중요한 이슈들을 피해갈 수 있는 자유를 갖게 된다. 본 연구는 그림책의 주 독자가 되는 어린이들이 의인화된 동물의 인간적 속성을 어떻게 파악하고 있으며 그 근거는 무엇인지를 알아보는데 목적을 가지고 있다. 연구대상은 그림책의 주독자인 6세 유아 62명과 초등학교 2학년 68명이었으며, 연구 도구는 등장인물의 의인화 정도에 따라 동물이 등장하는 세권의 그림책이 사용되었다. 아동에게 등장인물의 선호도, 주인공, 나이, 성에 대한 질문을 하였고, 이에 대한 반응은 연령과 그림책 별로 빈도 분석하였다. 그 결과, 아동은 자신과 비슷한 연령으로 특이한 능력이나 행동을 보이거나 친사회적인 행동을 하는 등장인물을 선호하였다. 주인공 판단에서는 유아는 단편적인 사건이나 외형 등 그림책의 일부를 보고 판단하였고, 초등학교 2학년 아동은 사건의 중심이 되는 인물을 주인공으로 선정하였다. 주인공의 나이 추측에서는 자신과 비슷한 연령으로 여겼으며, 등장인물들의 크기가 다를 경우에는 크기가 클수록 나이가 많다고 대답하였다. 등장인물의 성을 묻는 질문에 대해서 유아와 아동은 외형적으로 빨간 옷을 입거나 머리가 긴 등장인물을 제외한 모든 등장인물이 남자라고 반응하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The creation of animal characters is a significant characteristic of children`s literature. A number of techniques are employed to portray character such as narrative description, events, dialogue, and character`s features. However, the depiction of the picturebook protagonist as an animal gives the creator the freedom to eliminate several important issues such as age, gender, and social status. The purpose of this study is to investigate how children assess the human attributes of animal characters in picturebooks. The research subjects were 62 of 6-year-old young children and 68 of the 2nd-grade elementary school students. Three picture books read to the children were selected according to personification degree of the animal characters. In this study, children were requested to answer to the questions which had to do with main character, age, sex, and their preference of the characters. The data were analyzed according to their frequency based on children`s age and each picture book. The result showed that children preferred the characters with their age, special talent, unique behavior, or sociable personalities. Regarding the main character in picture book, 6 years old children focused on the role of the character in some parts of the story or his/her appearance. On the other hand, the 2nd grade elementary school students regarded the character as protagonist depending on his/her contribution to the story plot. Regarding the character`s age, children were likely to think that the main character would be their age, and the taller the one is, the older the one is. Regarding the character`s sex, children regarded all the characters as male except the ones dressed in red and with long hair.
