(Table of Contents)

    • This study aims to understand what anticipatory grief hospice caregivers usually experience in the dying process of their patients through art treatment and what the meaning and essence of their experience is and ultimately provide the information on the preventive healing process from the grief after spending a meaningful preparation process for the loss that hospice patients and caregivers will experience through art therapy.
    • This study selects Max Van Manen’s Hermeneutic phenomenology qualitative research techniques to delve deeper into an individual’s experience through qualitative data analysis including in-depth interviewing. In this study, research participants are the hospice caregivers who take care of patients at a hospice. Research participants reveal their mind to participate in this study to the caregivers who had already received art therapy from researchers or started their first meeting with the researchers at D hospice, S hospice in Seoul and S hospice in Suwon. A total of 9 research participants are interviewed in-depth. The period of data collection is from July, 2012 to Feb. 2013. The in-depth interview that was performed one time under the agreement of research participants is all recorded and all the data are collected until the data is saturated 1st time through researcher’s observation and recording and in-depth interviewing. The selected data are drawn from reflective thinking into the following six essential themes and 23 sub-themes.
    • As shown in the above, this study reviews and discusses research findings through in-depth interviewing with research participants based on essential themes and reaches the following conclusions on hospice caregivers’ experience of anticipatory grief through art therapy.
    • First, hospice caregivers experience big shock and hopelessness when they hear that their patients are diagnosed with terminal cancer. After then, they suffer from too much grief and chaos, shed tears, pray to God, and gradually accept patient’s death.
    • Second, hospice caregivers begin to be tired in both mind and body because they took care of patients for long time. As their burden of taking care of patients increases and their feelings of regret toward their family spring out, but they feel thankful for hospice volunteer staff who sincerely console and support patients.

    • Third, hospice caregivers are given an opportunity to express their suppressed feelings through art therapy and can be consoled through the art therapy process reflecting on their relationship with patients and their lives. Besides, they are also given an opportunity to recall patient’s death, either expressing their imagination that they let their patients go in drawings or painting a picture.
    • Fourth, hospice caregivers are sad and difficult when looking at patient’s pain as one’s number is up, but think that they have to spend meaningful hours because they know how precious the last time is. In addition, they can realize the real value of living and their happiness that they’d never experience in usual times through art therapy while looking at the patient’s death.
