The current study aimed to observe the reality of teachers` recommendation letters to retain the validity and the reliability of teachers` recommendation as an evaluation material. Surveys from 459 teachers who wrote recommendation letters for the 2013 early decision admissions officers screening to Kyung-Hee University were analyzed. The analysis showed the following results. First, students requested recommendation letter 1 month before application period the most (50%); teachers spent 8 hours on average in writing recommendation letters (53%); and the students` personality were the biggest factor in writing recommendation letters (93%). Second, 92% of teachers evaluated the students objectively (92%) and 51% of the teachers believed that the university does not receive recommendation letters as a formality, showing that teachers trust and evaluate recommendation letters as objective. Third, 41% of teachers believed that the screening result of the recommended student were different from expectation, showing some difference in teachers` evaluation and the university`s evaluation of the students. Fourth, for improvement: 1) basic pressure on recommendation letter, 2) request for objective index and length of recommendation letter, 3) clarity on the actual application rate of the recommendation letters were suggested. Finally, the limitations and implications of the current study were discussed, and directions for future studies were also suggested.
