This study seeks to explore the Maternal parental beliefs, parenting attitude and children`s sense of social competence among Korean mothers residing in Korea and those residing in Canada as immigrants or custodians. By comparing Korean mothers living in Korea and in Canada, this study enables one to understand the possible differences in parenting attitude and whether the differences are attributable to the Korean culture or the differences in their residences. The results of this study could serve as a useful reference for enhancing and understanding parent-children relationships and identifying desirable parenting attitude. Major findings of the study are as follows: 1) Parenting beliefs varied only with respect to child-centered parenting beliefs among the three groups of Korean mothers. 2) A difference was found among the three groups with respect to parenting attitude. The immigrant group exhibited the least negative parenting attitude. 3) Parental belief was found to affect the children`s sense of social competence. In particular, the stronger the child-centered parenting beliefs was associated with the stronger sense of social competence. 4) Although child-centered parenting beliefs and adult-centered parenting beliefs were found to affect parenting attitude, cultural-transformation beliefs had no impact on parenting attitude. 5) Parenting attitude and children`s sense of competence were found to be associated with each other, but not in a consistent manner. 6) Parental beliefs were found to affect children`s sense of social competence indirectly through their parenting attitude. In other words, parenting attitude appears to serve as a medium between parental beliefs and their children`s sense of social competence.
