북미교회의 한국전쟁 이해 = 미국장로교회와 캐나다연합교회를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

2013년은 한국전쟁 휴전 60주년이 되는 해이다. 부산에 있는 세계 유일의 유엔군 묘역인 유엔기념공원(United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea)에는 2,300명의 한국전쟁 참전 유엔군들이 묻혀있다. 누군가의 사랑하는 아들이었던 이들이 자신들의 집과 조국을 떠나 머나 먼 이국땅에 잠들어 있는 것이다. 한국전쟁 당시 가장 대표적인 기독교 국가들인 미국과 캐나다는 많은 군인들을 파병했고, 많은 희생자들을 냈다. 미국과 캐나다 교회는 한국전쟁을 어떻게 이해하고 있었을까? 전쟁터로 파병되는 젊은 청년들과 그들의 가족들에게 교회는 한국전쟁 참전에 대해 어떤 의미를 부여했으며, 수많은 전사자들의 가족들과 부상자들이 겪는 고통과 아픔을 어떻게 설명했을까? 본 논문의 목적은 미국과 캐나다 교회가 한국전쟁을 어떻게 이해하고 있었는지를 연구하는 것이다. 연구 시기와 범위는 한국전쟁 발발(1950.6.25)로부터 휴전(1953.7.27)까지 나온 미국장로교회(Presbyterian Church in the United States of America)와 캐나다연합교회(United Church of Canada)의 공식적인 자료들로 제한한다. 한국전쟁에 대한 연구는 정치적·군사적·외교적 관계 차원에서 다양하게 진행되었다. 교회의 관점에서는, 한국전쟁을 전후한 한미 양국 교회의 관계가 전쟁 원조활동을 중심으로 연구되었고, 미국과 캐나다 교회의 공식적인 자료들에 기초한 선행연구는 미진한 상황이다. 주로 미국과 캐나다 교회의 재한 선교사들을 통한 구호활동에 대한 연구가 진행되었다. 본 연구를 위해, 미국과 캐나다 교회의 사료관이 소장 중인 일차자료들에 대한 조사와 연구를 진행했다. 캐나다연합교회 자료는 토론토 캐나다연합교회사료관(United Church of Canada Archives)의 일차자료들을 조사했으며, 미국연합장로교회 자료는, 필라델피아의 미국장로교사료관(Presbyterian Historical Society) 데이터베이스를 통해 접근한 후, 샌프란시스코신학대학원(San Francisco Theological Seminary)에 소장된 일차자료들을 조사했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The year 2013 is the sixty-year anniversary of the armistice of the Korean War. At the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan, Korea, rest 2,300 UN troops who sacrificed their lives during the war. The United States of America and Canada sent numerous troops to Korea. We wonder how the churches of U.S.A. and Canada recognized the war, how they justified it, and how they explained the meaning of war entry to the families of the young soldiers. The purpose of this paper is to examine the churches" understanding of the Korean War. It specifically focuses on the documents published by the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America and the United Church of Canada during the period of the war (June 25, 1950~July 27, 1953). The previous studies of the Korean War were mostly approached on the level of political, military, and diplomatic relations and also church historians mainly dealt with the churches" humanitarian aids. Precious documents owned by the Presbyterian Historical Society of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. and the United Church of Canada Archives were analyzed for this study.
