1880년대 미국 북장로회 선교사 지침서에 대한 연구 = A Research on the Manuals for Missionaries of the Presbyterian Church of U.S.A. (PCUSA) in the 1880's

The purpose of this dissertation is to research and evaluate the manuals for missionaries of the Presbyterian Church of U.S.A. (PCUSA), specially based on the two manuals of 1882 and 1889. PCUSA established the Board of Foreign Missions in 1837, and published the first manuals for missionaries, A Manual Prepared for the Use of Missionaries and Missionary Candidates in Connection with the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church. And the Board of Foreign Missions published the 4th edition of it in 1882, A Manual Prepared for the Use of Missionary Candidates and Missionaries in Connection with the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church, Fourth Edition. The early missionaries of PCUSA such as Horace Newton Allen(安連, 1858~1932), Horace Grant Underwood(元杜尤, 1859~1916), John W. Heron(惠論, 1856~1890) could come to Korea and begin to do their missions according to this pamphlet. Besides the Board of Foreign Missions published the revised version in 1889, Manual of Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the USA for the Use of Missionaries and Missionary Candidates, Revised and Adopted December 16, 1889. William Martyn Baird(裵偉良, 1862~1931), Cadwallader C. Vinton(賓頓, 1856~1936), and Oliver R. Avison(魚丕信, 1860~1956) could come to Korea following by this pamphlet in the 1890"s
Through the manuals above, PCUSA had the systematic and accurate support system for the missions abroad, relating with the General Assembly and the Board of Foreign Missions. The Mission by PCUSA could succeed by the efforts. Missionaries of PCUSA could also increase the efficiency of the missions, with the close relationship with the persons in the Board of Foreign Missions. Most of all, the Board of Foreign Missions made the missionaries focus on the their missions, with fully supporting system not only the missionaries but also the families of them. And the Korea Church which received the helps of the missionaries in the past, should consider the manuals and their meaning to succeed in the World Mission of now and future.
