Kim, Mi-Kyung. 2002. Preferred Argument Structure in Korean Discourse. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 27-3, 315-343. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. One is to examine the similarities and differences between written and spoken text based on the statistic analysis of 2526 clauses in four kinds of written text and conversational speech. This paper observes the frequency of pronominalization, deletion, movement and topicalization of 3590 core arguments and shows that the fundamental difference between writing and speech is that deletion of arguments is more common in speech and that topic-comment structure is more common in writing. The second object of this paper is to examine the preferred argument structure(PAS) of written text and spoken text in Korean and to find out whether the PAS constraints in terms of Du Bois(2002) hold for written text as well as spoken one. The statistics show that restricted deletion and frequent topicalization of arguments in written text induce the difference between the PASs of written and spoken text. This paper argues that Du Bois' PAS constraints hold for spoken text as a whole, while they hold only partially for written text in Korean. (Daeduk College)
