고령화시대 노인 고독사 문제에 대한 윤리적 반성 = Ethical Reflection on Lonely Death Problem of the Elderly in the Aging Society

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The objective of this thesis is to analyze the reality of rapidly increasing lonely death problem and its social phenomenon together with aging trend of the Korean society based on its case and reflect the matter as to what is the social mechanism that acts as a drive of such lonely death in the back side of such phenomenon in an ethical perspective.
As a result of this analysis, it was concluded as follows. First, an issue of taking care of the elderly is an issue of 'public ethics' as a joint responsibility of the family and the society, not an issue of being assigned to any 'individual' any longer. Second, responsibility for the elderly is an unconditional obligation not only as a response to a request of the elderly as others but also as a sole 'main agent' and 'the very fact that the elderly exists' calls for obligatory justification for such existence and such justification to be put into practice. Third, as a 'filial duty' in contemporary terms, not a practice of traditional 'filial duty' being bound by limitation of familism, practice of 'filial duty' is required to be implemented as an 'intimacy of all the human relations'. Fourth, even though social malaise of modern society had marginalized the life of the elderly and they were alienated from the place of human interaction, their dignity and bioethics as a human being are their natural right. Therefore, mutually taking care of the life, transferring such care with a sense of responsibility and enhancing quality of life of the elderly by the family (individual) and the society (the state) are the foundation of bioethics to be obligatorily observed by all of us.
Therefore, it is considered that when this issue of ethical idea should be re-established and works in our consciousness, lonely death as a human 'alienation' and an issue of the elderly being isolated from interaction between human being and the society may find a clue to its solution.
