무자녀 기혼여성의 낙인 대응전략을 통한 정체성 재정립 = Identity Rework through Stigma Management among Childless Women

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 무자녀 기혼여성이 주위사람들로부터 받는 부정적인 평가에 대한 대응전략과 이에 따른 정체성 재정립 작업을 이해하는데 초점을 두었다. 8명의 연구참여자를 심층면접하여 자료를 수집하였으며 여기서 밝혀진 결과는 다음과 같다. 연구참여자들이 제시한 대응전략은 ‘솔직한 불임 언급’, ‘얼버무림(거짓말)’, ‘정당화’, ‘역비난’, ‘상황 재해석’, ‘회피’ 등 여섯 가지 요인으로 유형화 되었다. ‘솔직한 불임 언급’은 신체적 이유에 의해 불임이 된 여성들에게 나타났으며 두 번째 ‘얼버무림(거짓말)’은 나중에 자녀를 가질 것처럼 위장하여 비난을 모면하는 대응전략이다. 세 번째 범주는 ‘정당화’로 자신의 무자녀 상황을 긍정적으로 인식하는 대응전략이고 네 번째 범주는 ‘역비난’으로 유자녀 부모가 자기 자식만 생각하는 이기적인 현실을 비판하거나 무자녀를 걱정하는 부모를 오히려 비난하며 대응하는 것이다. 다섯 번째 ‘상황 재해석’ 범주는 사회봉사활동이나 무자녀에 대한 종교적 해석을 통해 자녀양육보다 사회적으로 가치 있는 일에 중점을 두는 인식에 토대를 두고 있다. 마지막으로 ‘회피’는 가능한 한 모임이나 대화를 피함으로써 무자녀의 상황을 남들에게 알리지 않는 방법을 의미한다. 이러한 전략은 주위로부터 주어지는 부정적 평가에 대응하는 정체성 재정립과 연관이 있으며 사회적 지배담론의 수용정도에 따라 달라지고 있다. 무자녀 여성은 이러한 정체성 재정립 작업을 통해 지배적인 모성담론에 저항하는 틈새의 가능성을 제시하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Childless women are often facing negative evaluation about their identity in a dominant belief system that promotes motherhood as the most important role for women. This study examined strategies used by childless women to manage their deviant identity in a dominant motherhood ideology. Data were collected from in-depth interviews with eight childless women. Analysis revealed six themes of their strategies in the essential description. These themes consisted of (1) stating infertility, (2) passing(lying), (3) justification, (4) counter-condemnation, (5) redefining the situation, (6) avoidance. These strategies emerged as defensive, intermediate, or proactive, based on the degree to which participants accept or challenge family-friendly ideologies. Use of these strategies was part of the ‘identity rework’ that participants engaged in to reject discreditable identities as childless women, that is, deviants. Childless women in this study indicated the possibility of challenging a dominant motherhood ideology through ‘identity rework’.
