사회과 주요 개념에 대한 역사적 고찰 -쿨리의 1차 집단을 중심으로 = A Historical Account of a Major Concept in Social Studies: Focusing on Cooley`s Concept of Primary Group

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is aimed to illuminate the nature of the primary group as a central mechanism by which individual and society are related, and to examine how it is reflected in the Korean social studies textbooks. For that purpose, this study not only attempts to trace out Cooley`s conception of the primary group and its conceptual changes made by other sociologists, but takes the Korean social studies textbooks as an object of analysis. In the concept of the primary group, Cooley`s interest has been not in classifying social groups, but in the process of rebirth of an individual into social being and of forming of social group. He emphasizes that the socializing function of the primary group can be done through the formation of we-ness. Thus, the central property of the primary group should be related to the establishment of we-ness. Neither has he have interests in the nature of other social groups in contrast to that of the primary group, nor used the term of the secondary group. However, most of the Korean social studies textbooks treat the primary group as if it would be crucial to distinguish between primary and secondary groups in terms of the pattern of contact, without dealing with the former group`s essential nature and decisive property. Unfortunately, such conception of the primary group as suggested by Cooley tends to disappear in those textbooks. If any, it is shown in a distorted way. It is necessary to revise the curriculum and textbook on that concept in order to avoid such misconceptions.
