비교문화적으로 본 한국과 미국 부모들의 유아도덕교육 = A Comparative Cultural Study on the Ways in which Korean and American Parents Living in the U.S. Perceive and Practice the Moral Education of their Young Children

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 미국에 거주하는 한국인 가정과 미국인 가정의 부모들의 유아도덕교육의 일식과 실제를 문화기술적 연구방법을 통해 조사하였다. 분석 결과, 부모들이 지닌 도덕성 개념은 '옳고 그름을 분별하고 옳은 일을 하기', '내면화된 공동체의 규칙 준수하기', '타인을 보살피기'이다. 부모들이 가정에서 가장 강조하는 도덕적 덕목은 '보살핌', '정직', '타인 존중', '책임감'이었다. 한국 부모들은 형제를 돌보는 보살핌과 어른을 공경하는 타인 존중을 강조한 반면 미국 부모들은 모든 사람을 돌보는 보살핌과 모든 사람을 존중함은 강조한 점에서 문화적 차이가 있었다. 부모들은 유아기가 도덕성 발달에 매우 중요한 시기이며, 도덕성 함양을 위한 가장 효과적인 교육방법은 '부모의 도덕적 실천'으로 대답하였다. 한국 부모들은 자녀의 비도덕적 행동을 조기에 근절시키기 위하여 '체벌로 다스린 반면, 미국 부모들은 '대화'를 통하여 해결하였다. 본 연구는 윤아 도덕성 발달에 영향을 미치는 가족 상황에 대한 연구의 필요성을 시사해준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Using ethnographic research methodology, this study compares the ways in which Korean and American parents of young children perceive and practice moral education. Subjects are Korean and American parents living in the United States. The study reveals that both sets of parents conceptualize morality as 'knowing right or wrong and doing the right thing', 'keeping community rules internalized', and 'caring for others'. The moral virtues emphasized most at home, again by both Korean and American parents, are 'caring', 'honesty', 'respect for others', and 'responsibility'. The Korean parents emphasize 'caring' as taking care of younger siblings and respecting the elderly. On the other hand, the American parents stress 'caring' as taking care of and respecting others in general. Both groups of parents believe that early childhood is a significant period for developing morality and that 'parents' own moral conduct' is the best way to educate the children about morality. When children do morally wrong things, the Korean parents believe that they must eradicate misbehavior with physical punishment as soon as it happens. The American parents in this study tended to discuss the problems with the children in an effort to arrive at solutions. These results suggest that there is need for further research to examine the moral development of young children within the context of the family.
