The purpose of this study is to examine whether there are lags in emotion related theory of mind tasks, specifically the ability to use surprise cues to judge a false belief task (backward reasoning) and the ability to judge the surprise facial expression (prediction). Eighty five 3-year-olds, eighty four 4-year-olds and eighty three 5-year-olds were tested on three different types of theory of mind tasks (an appearance-reality task, a content exchange task, and a location shift task). These participants were also assigned to one of three groups-either to one of two task groups relating to emotions or to a standard theory of mind task group. Our study reveals that the two groups assigned to the emotions related tasks performed better than the standard theory of mind task group, but found no difference between the two groups assigned to the emotion related tasks. The data suggest that there is no lag in theory of mind development related to emotions. The results also demonstrate that the tasks differed at difficulty levels. This finding implies that inconsistencies reported in previous studies may be due to the different difficulty levels of tasks. We also found that children as young as 4 years of age can use surprise cues to understand others' mind and to predict others' surprise emotion when there is a mismatch between reality and their expectation.
