This study examines the effects of a movement activity program based on Integrated Curriculum tenet and addresses the following questions: 1. Do movement activities based on integrated curriculum approaches affect young children's basic movement abilities? 2. Do such movement activities affect young children's creative physical expression abilities? 3. Do such movement activities affect young children's creative thinking abilities? The subjects of this study were 32 five-year-old children attending a private kindergarten in Mokpo city. Subjects were divided into a control group (15 children), and an experimental group(17 children). The research instruments employed were: The Basic Movement Ability Test by Kim, E. S. (1994) adapted from Hoffman et. al, a test to determine physical expression ability, invented by Bae, H. S. (1990) based on Laban's concept of movement, and form B of Torrance's Creative Thinking Tests. The experimental procedure was of six-weeks duration and each child was video taped during that phase. Also, each group was video taped in the pre-and post-test phase, and each child's spontaneous activities were analyzed. Data were then analyzed by ANCOVA. The results: after the movement activity program, 1) children's basic movement ability showed a significant statistical difference; 2) their physical expression ability also increased by a significant statistical difference; 3) however, there was no significant statistical difference in their creative thinking ability. Because statistically different gains were demonstrated in two of the three areas examined, movement ability and expression, we conclude that it is desirable to include movement activity programs in various sections of the early childhood curriculum.
