The present study reviewed the role of motivation in psychotherapy. The author examined the importance of motivation in understanding psychological processes, theoretical approaches that emphasize therapeutic effects of motivation, and recent empirical studies on motivational therapy. It was revealed that motivation interacts with emotional responses and cognitive processes. Additionally, it is asserted that motivation affects interpersonal adjustment and subjective and psychological well-being. Therapeutic approaches were also explored that address attunement between therapy goal and client`s motivation, instill motivation to change in the client, and treat the client`s maladaptive motivational structure and systematic restructuring. Recent empirical studies on the effects of therapeutic approaches emphasizing the role of motivation were also reviewed. Finally, issues of individual differences and importance of social support in motivational approaches were discussed.
