성폭력 두려움과 사회통제 = Fear of Sexual Violence and Social Control: Focusing on the media's treatment of child sexual violence cases

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 아동 성폭력 살해 사건 중 최근에 가장 관심을 많이 모았던 김길태 사건에 대한 신문과 TV 등의 보도기사를 분석하여 언론의 아동 성폭력 사건 대응을 비판적으로 검토하는 것을 목표로 한다. 한국에서 아동 성폭력 사건보도는 2008년 이후 급격하게 증가하기 시작했다. 그 중 김길태 사건은 그 어떤 사건과도 비교가 안 될 정도로 언론의 관심을 받았다. 김길태 사건에 대한 보도는 아동 성폭력에 대한 심층적 보도는 거의 없이 김길태 개인에만 초점이 맞추어졌다. 아동 성폭력에 대한 대책도 극단적인 소수 범죄자 방지에만 맞추어져 효과나 비용소모에서 문제점을 남겼다.
아동 성폭력과 같은 범죄에 대한 언론의 집중포화가 야기하는 또 다른 문제는 성폭력의 두려움이 더욱 커지는 것이다. 아동과 부모들의 공포만 커지는 것이 아니라 청소년여성이나 성인여성의 성폭력에 대한 공포도 커질 수밖에 없다. 성폭력의 공포는 수동적이고 의존적이며 스스로에게 검열이 심해야 방정한 여성이 된다는 자기 억압적인 여성성의 형성과정과 깊게 연관되어 있다. 김길태 사건보도나 정부의 대처는 아동 성폭력 사건이 정치에서 무관한 가치중립적인 사건이 아니라는 것을 보여준다. 인권에 대한 기본 규정, 사회불안요소에 대한 방향 호도가 이루어지고, 부모의 역할, 특히 어머니의 역할도 이런 흐름에 엮여 있음을 알게 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to critically examine the media"s treatment of child sexual violence cases by analyzing newspaper articles and television reports on the recently publicized Kim Giltae case.
Coverage of child sexual violence cases in South Korea has increased drastically since 2008. Among these cases, the Kim Giltae case received by far the most media attention. Reports on the Kim Giltae case focused solely on the individual Kim Giltae, almost without any in depth analysis of child sexual violence itself. Measures against child sexual violence were consequently centered on prevention of extreme criminals, which caused efficiency and cost problems.
Another problem that excessive media coverage of child sexual violence causes is an increase in fear of sexual violence. This concerns not only children and their parents, but also teenage girls and women. Fear of sexual violence is deeply linked to the formation of a self-oppressive femininity, which requires that one should be passive and behave prudently in order to become a respectable woman.
The media coverage and the government reaction regarding the Kim Giltae case shows that child sexual violence cases are not of a neutral and unpolitical nature. How to perceive human rights and factors of social conflicts is closely related to social discussion of such cases; the role of parents, and especially mothers is linked to this change.
