장애아 어머니의 대처전략 유형에 관한 생애사적 연구 = Mothers` Caring Strategies Associated with the Life Cycle of Disabled Children

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to examine what strategies mothers develop in order to deal with some problems they encounter in the process of raising their disabled children. The research method to be employed here is the in-depth interview with 15 mothers who have a disabled child and an analysis of their life cycle. As a result of doing such a field research, this study discovers that in the early childhood of the disabled children, the mothers have strong desire for their child`s full recovery and improvement and utilize problem-focused coping as a major strategy, while choosing emotion-focused coping as a supplementary strategy, such as blaming themselves for children`s disability, crying out, avoiding interpersonal relationship with others, and the like. And it also finds out that during the children`s school-age years, they make use of problem- focused coping as a major strategy, but its characteristics are changed into a structural approach by forming social networks and organizing collective actions. Finally, it shows that if their children reach adulthood and stay home all day, most mothers should take care of them and thus employ emotion-focused coping as a major strategy of relieving stress. Once their child enters a university or gets a job, however, they utilize problem-focused coping strategies instead.
