The purpose of this study was to find out parents` lived experiences and expectations of parent education and involvement in early childhood education. In-depth interviews with 10 parents with children attending kindergartens or childcare centers were implemented to examine their perceptions on effective or ineffective parent involvement activities and their expectations for future parent involvement activities. The findings of the study indicated that parents of young children perceived activities involving parents and children together, workshops focusing on practical information regarding child rearing, activities for all family members, parent-teacher conferences, and notes between parents and teachers as effective ways of parent involvement. On the other hands, parents mentioned orientation sessions that fail to meet their needs, parenting classes that focus on theories without making connection to practices, activities with excessive adherence to formality, and websites and periodical notes that disable two-way communication as ineffective ways of parent involvement. Parents of young children wanted opportunities to carry out more active roles in parent participation activities instead of being passive participators. They also requested parent involvement activities that are more responsive to diverse family situations and that facilitate long-term relationships among parents.
