湖西地域 지석묘의 사회경제적 기능 = Socioeconomic Function of Hoseo Dolmens

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 지석묘의 사회경제적 기능에 대한 기존의 설명모형이 호서지역 지석묘의 축조양상 특히, 청동기시대 전–중기 전환기에 집중되는 양상을 역동적으로 설명하기에는 부족함이 있음을 지적하고 역동성을 담보할 수 있는 가설적 대안을 모색해 보고자 한다. 이러한 가설적 대안은 농업생산성에 대한 분석, 고고학적으로 복원된 호서지역 청동기시대 전–중기 전환기의 사회.정치.경제적 변화상에 대한 검토, 해외 사례연구에 대한 비교문화적 이해를 바탕으로 수립되며, 어떤 맥락에서 지석묘의 집중적 축조가 나타나게 되었고 그러한 현상은 후속(혹은 동반)할 사회적 변화에 어떤 영향을 미치거나 어떤 기여를 했는지에 대한 설명을 포함하고 있다. 호서지역 청동기시대 전–중기 전환기는, 사회의 여러 측면에서 변화가 발생하며, 사회정치적으로 부상하려는 국소집단 간의 경쟁이 고조되는 시기이다. 농경지 확보를 전제한 이념조작의 전통적 기제로서 지석묘는 이를 전후한 시기에 집중적으로 축조되며, 공간적으로도 급속하게 확산된다. 이러한 과정에서 지석묘의 축조를 후원한 이들은 이념의 조작을 통해 경제적 기반을 통제하게 되고 중요한 생산 요소인 노동력의 통제에도 성공하게 된다. 이에 더 나아가 水稻作을 통한 집약적 미곡생산을 주도하면서 사회정치적 통제의 財源을 확대하게되고 이는 더 큰 통제력의 기반이 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Pointing out that current models cannot properly explain the dynamic aspects of dolmen construction in Hoseo region, which drastically increased during the transition from Early to Middle Bronze Ages, I suggest a new one.
This new model comes from analysis on soil productivity, full understanding on social, political and economic changes at the transition, and reveiwing cross-cultural case studies. And it focuses on how drastic increment of dolmen construction at the transition would have been related to the sociopolitical changes following.
The transition from Early to Middle Bronze Ages in Hoseo region witnessed changes in various social dimensions, such as, increasing sociopolitical competition between leaders of local groups. For the leaders, constructing dolmens, as traditional means of ideological manipulation to gain arable lands, could have been viewed as an important path to succeed in the competition. The construction of dolmens rapidly spread into the area rarely occupied in precedent period. In the process, the newly aggrandized elite who sponsored the dolmen construction could have pooled labor from domestic into public sphere through giving right to cultivate arable lands to producer households who rarely maximize their labor input. And then they initiate agricultural intensification to finance their newly established sociopolitical institutions, by which they can secure bigger power to control commoners.
