The paradigm of today`s culture is not confined to an abstract or mental dimension; rather, it is expanding as culture contents and applying a concrete and material dimension to all reaches of our lives. In this new definition of culture, a term that is often mentioned, together with culture contents, is storytelling. Then, how has storytelling, rather than narrative, come to the fore in the enjoyment and creativity of today`s popular culture and art? The answer lies in the incredible changes brought about in value judgments on culture and art as well as in life styles produced by developments in science represented by computer and digital technology. This study examines the theoretical background of storytelling (i.e., digital storytelling) that has emerged with the introduction of digital culture. In the process, it analyzes the historical changes of digital storytelling as a means of relating culture contents and the new formulations of culture in the 21st century. The study further takes a look at the theoretical background of storytelling as inherent in the various types of culture contents to point out the formal differences between storytelling in the analog era and digital era.
