Motivational - problems may 00 inevitable with web- based instruction due to the distance between instructors and students. This implies that instructional designers need to prescribe motivational strategies for those motivational problems. Among three types of motivation (motivation to initiate, motivation to persist., motivation to continue) related to web-based instruction, instructional designers need to pay more attention to how to keep motivation to persist at an optimal level. Motivationally adaptive web-based instruction is one that adaptively provides learners with motivational strategies based on information obtained from the continuous diagnose of learner motivation. That is, under the premise that learner motivation changes continuously, motivationally adaptive web-based instruction need to diagnose learner motivation and provide the most appropriate motivational strategies at the moment. In this article, approaches to provide motivational strategies adaptively are reviewed. These include MACA! approach, Button Theory, and MMSS. For this review, Keller``s ARCS model is used as a framework of reference.
