This study attempts to describe and define the field of open and distance education, to identify the critical elements of the field, to explore the roles of information technology in enhancing various types of interaction in open and distance learning environment, and thus to suggest us age models of information technology for active and meaningful interaction in open and distance education. Even though there is extensive overlap between the us e of the term open education and distance education, each has distinctive characteristics For this study, open education is an educational ideology or a state of mind whereas distance education is a form of education. Based on the identified characteristics of open and distance education, the roles of information technology have been specified. Among them, the provision of synchronous and non- synchronous two- way communication is the most prominent feature. Information technology helps the learner in open and distance education interact with content, instructor, and other learners with a greater diversity and openness of access. It is suggested in this study that the three models can be applied to utilizing information technology to improve the quantity and quality of interaction in open and distance education: information access model, knowledge construction model, and collaborative learning model.
