Ins tructional systems design(ISD) as a field represents a convergence of psychology, management science, and communication science, which have been influential for a theory and practice of ISD. Since 1980s, there has been a movement toward a critical reflection on the limitation of theory itself and the power of its theory to explain ISD reality, leading to search for an alternative paradigm. The purpos e of this study is to review of the theoretical trends and issues of ISD field in terms of theoretical practice ; then to draw on theoretical implications of cons tructivism, design as art, soft systems theory and chaos theory for the practice of ISD ; finally, to provide for what should bedone to be ISD as a discipline from the critical analys is of theoretical trends and issues of ISD.
