미술치료의 예술적 표현에 관한 신경과학적 고찰 = Neuro-Scientific Contemplation on Artistic Expression of Art Therapy

This study aims to examine neuroscientifically the interactive characteristics between artistic expressions of art therapy and brain actions. Providing neuroscientific information on artistic expressions which might be considered as the core of art therapy, the study will supply a head start for independent research methods for art therapy, and emphasize art therapy as a part of art psychology based on scientism of art as well as unique identity and expertise of art therapy within the domain of psychotherapy. To do so, it analyzes and suggests in the order of interactions between artistic expressions and neuroscientific actions of art therapy, first, the cognitive understanding at the stage of contacting the art media, next, the emotive understanding at the stage of expressive process of art, then, neuroscientific understanding at the stage of creating an art. The results of the study are as follows. Art expressions using various art media would induce an emotive resonance through activating nerves in the course of acquiring cognitions and sensations. The resonance in turn stimulates emotive expressions, so as to get immersed in the art work which boosts and accelerates the therapeutic effects. Thus, it can be said that art media end up with stimulating cognitions and sensations, and emotive reactions in the course of art expression create images, subconsciousness, and symbols, while completed art works give the sense of creativity, achievement, catharsis, and emotive integrity to provide happiness, order, and harmony between body and mind.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 미술치료의 예술적 표현과 뇌 작용간의 상호 반응적 특성에 관하여 신경과학적으로 고찰하였다. 그 동안 연구와 임상영역에서 괄목할 만한 성장을 이루었지만 독자적인 연구이론과 연구방법론의 미비는 미술치료 발전의 난제로 지적되고 있다. 본 연구는 미술치료의 핵심이라고 할 수 있는 예술적 표현에 관한 신경과학적 정보를 제공함으로써, 독자적인 연구방법론 개발의 단초를 제공하고, 미술치료가 예술의 과학성에 근거한 예술심리학의 한 분야임을, 또 심리치료영역에서의 정체성과 전문성을 강조하는데 기여하고자 한다. 이를 위해, 미술치료의 예술적 표현과 신경과학적 작용이 진행되는 순서에 따라 예술매체의 접촉단계에서의 지각 및 감각작용의 이해, 예술표현과정에서의 정서작용의 이해, 예술작품 창조와 신경과학적 이해의 순으로 분석, 제시하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 다양한 매체를 이용한 예술적 표현은 관련 지각 및 감각경로의 신경을 활성화시켜 정서적 공명을 초래하고, 이는 곧 정서표현으로 이어져 작품제작의 몰입과 치료 효과의 증대를 촉진하는 것으로 나타났다. 결과적으로, 예술매체는 지각 및 감각을 자극하고, 표현과정의 정서작용은 심상과 무의식, 상징을 만들어 내며, 완성된 예술작품은 창조성, 성취감, 카타르시스, 정서의 통합을 이루어 심신의 안녕과 질서, 조화의 성취로 이어지는 것으로 나타났다.
