This study is to estimate economic impacts of EXPO 2012 YEOSU by adopting a regional input-output model, which is derived by a location-quotient approach. EXPO 2012 requires huge initial investments to construct infrastructure and exhibition facilities, and induces both domestic residence and foreigners to visit Geonnam region. These initial direct impacts will cause backward and forward indirect effects to various industries that are linked with the industries boosted by initial investments. Estimation results of the study can be summarized as follows: (1) EXPO 2012 YEOSU will increase the region`s outputs approximately by 4646.8~4236.9 billion Won, employment by 84,323~67,891 people, and total income by 900.6~838.9 billion Won. (2) The estimated production increase is about 1.95~1.77 times of the total investments made by governments, and amounts to about 2.36~2.58% of the total production of Geonnam Province in 2008. The increased employment and income are equal to about 7.5~9.3% and 2.3~2.5% of the total employment and income of Geonnam in 2008, respectively. (3) Economic impacts are mostly concentrated in services related industries, except several manufacturing industries including the food, chemical and basic metal industries that account for about 18~20% of the total output increase. The paper also provides various policy suggestions to boost regional development in connection with EXPO 2012 YEOSU.
