대학생의 성격 특성과 학업 성취와의 관계에서 정보 활용 유능감의 매개 효과 분석 = The influence of personality traits and information competency on the academic achievement of college students: the analysis of a mediation effect of information competency

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of personality traits on information competency and academic achievement in college students. A mediation effect of information competency on the relationship between personality and academic achievement was also examined. A total of 245 college students in Seoul and its vicinity. completed two questionnaires, and reported their GPA scores. Data were analyzed using correlations, multiple regressions, and structural equation modeling technique. Results showed that conscientiousness was the strongest component which accounts for information competency and academic achievement. Students with high levels of conscientiousness were more likely to perceive themselves as competent in evaluating information sources and information qualities. In particular, information competency significantly mediated the link between personality traits and academic achievement. Discussions included educational implications for academic improvement, and suggestions for future studies were presented.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 대학생들의 성격특성이 정보 활용 유능감과 학업 성취에 미치는 영향과 정보 활용 유능감이 성격-학업 성취 간의 관계를 매개하는 효과를 구조방정식 모형으로 검증하였다. 서울시 소재 한 대학에 재학 중인 245명의 대학생이 연구에 참여하여 NEO-PI 5요인 성격검사와 정보 활용 유능감 척도에 응답하였으며, 참여한 학생들의 평균 학점과 수강 과목의 시험 성적을 수집하였다. 연구 결과, 성실성이 정보 활용 유능감과 학업 성취에 가장 크게 영향을 미치는 성격 특성인 것으로 나타났다. 개방성과 외향성이 높을수록 정보 활용 유능감도 높았으나 이러한 성격 특성은 학업 성취와는 큰 관계가 없었다. 한편, 정보 활용 유능감은 성격 특성과 학업 성취를 부분 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 성실성이 정보 활용 유능감을 높이고 정보 활용 유능감이 궁극적으로 학업 성취에 영향을 준다는 것을 제시하고 있다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 정보 활용 유능감의 증진을 통해 학업 성취를 높을 수 있는 방안이 논의되었으며 후속 연구를 위한 제안점이 제시되었다.
