The village that is the object of this study has been connected with a racetrack and military facilities in the Japanese colonial period, and with Kamp Hialeah since the Korean War. I seek to examine this very locality through the memories of inhabitants around the camp. In the Japanese colonial period, they were deprived of their tenant rights by the construction of a racetrack, and suffered from having their farmlands commandeered by the military camp. They could barely get their lands back after independence, but were robbed of them by the US troops once again. A life around military facilities meant to live under the enormous violence and surveillance, which changed the culture of village. The village’s image was made bad by the demoralization and social discrimination of the military camp town.
However, the racetrack gave the villagers opportunities to meet a new culture in the Japanese colonial period. Not existing only as closed spaces, the inside and outside of Kamp Hialeah were always interacting on each other. The communication in the military camp town was based on the economic relations between American soldiers within the camp, children and dwellers in the village, and the transaction of the US troops’ goods by the medium of foreigners’ whores and tradespeople.
As mentioned above, the experience of the villagers around Kamp Hialeah revealed the powerness and aggression of the military camp, or the closedness of the high wall and barbed-wire fence, as well the villagers created a new economic order in the relation with American soldiers, experiencing the American culture.
