증언적 믿음의 인식적 정당성 : 흄의 원리에 대한 비판적 고찰 = Justification of Testimonial Belief : A Critical Review of Hume's discussion

국문 초록 (Abstract)

흄은 증언적 믿음이 귀납 추론의 일종이라는 전제 하에, 증언되는 사건이 발생할 확률보다 증언이 거짓일 확률이 더 작을 경우에만 증언을 믿는 것이 정당하다는 원리를 확립한다. 이 원리는 증언에 근거하여 기적이 발생했다고 믿는 것은 대개의 경우 현명하지 않다는 흄의 주장을 뒷받침한다. 본 논문은 흄의 주장에 관한 기존의 비판을 검토한 후에, 증언의 합리적 수용에 관한 흄의 원리가 무한후퇴를 낳거나 논점 선취에 토대한 비일관성을 함축하는 문제가 있음을 보인다. 필자의 논증이 적절하다면 증언적 믿음은 귀납 추론의 일종이 아니라는 입장의 전망을 밝게 한다. 이상의 논의로부터 도출되는 안전한 결론은 신뢰할 만한 증언이 제시된 경우에 기적의 발생을 믿는 것이 이성에 의해 지지되지 않는 것과 마찬가지로 기적의 발생을 믿지 않는 것 또한 이성에 의해 지지되지 않는다는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Hume maintains that it is usually unreasonable to believe a miracle on the ground of testimony. For this purpose, Hume derives the principle of reasonable acceptance of testimony (PT) from a more general principle of proof and probability (PPP) in assuming that believing testimonies is a type of inductive reasoning. PT, however, contains a problem of infinite regress, the solution of which brings the problem of inconsistency grounded on the question-begging assumption against miracle. The examination of this dilemmatic problem of PT suggests that forming a belief on the ground of testimony is not governed completely by inductive reasoning, but that it is also guided by a principle of its own. The safe conclusion of this discussion will be that, if a credible testimony about a miracle is given, neither the belief in the miracle nor the unbelief of it is supported by reason. Hume is right in saying that the belief in the miracle is not supported by reason; He is wrong in missing that the unbelief of the miracle is not supported by reason, either.
