국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 김재준을 중심으로 1960~70년대 한국 정치사상의 한 단면을 분석하고, 이를 한국 현대정치사상사의 체계화 작업을 위한 토대 자료로 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 김재준은 한국 교회 민주화운동의 상징적인 인물이며, 한국의 민주화 투쟁 과정에서 기독교가 중요한 역할을 수행했다는 사실은 널리 인정된다. 특히 김재준은 민주주의 형성의 과제를 마주한 한국 사회에서 전개되는 정치적 사유의 특성을 잘 보여준다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 예컨대 신학자로서 그는 뚜렷한 자유주의적 지향을 지니고 있었으며, 또한 그런 맥락에서 동시대의 민족지상주의와는 일정한 거리를 유지했다. 하지만 동시에 공산당의 통치를 경험한 이북 출신의 기독교계 인사로서 그는 확고한 반공의식을 지녔으며, 이 점에서는 한국 사회 일반의 보수주의와 친화력을 가졌다. 이 연구에서 필자는 1960~70년대 민주화운동의 한 중요한 사상적 기반을 제공한 김재준의 정치적 사유에서 자유주의와 민족주의, 보수주의, 급진주의가 어떤 형태로 합종연횡을 이루며 특유의 민주주의 사상을 형성해갔는지, 그 과정에서 발견할 수 있는 한국 현대정치사상의 특성은 무엇인지 살펴본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article purports to analyze a feature of Korean political thought in 1960s~70s with a special focus on Kim Jaejoon and to produce some data for systematizing contemporary Korean history of political thought. It is largely acknowledged that Christian Church played a crucial role in the process of the Korean democratization, and Kim Jaejoon is a symbolic figure of the Korean Christian democratization movement. He is worthy to be noted because he reveals very well a characteristic of political thinking deployed in modern Korean society which confronted with the task of democratic nation state building. As a theologist he had a strong tendency toward liberalism, and in this respect he kept his distance from contemporary nationalists. On the other hand, as a Christian leader who experienced communist government in North Korea he was a firmed anti-communist, and in this respect he showed a typical example of Korean conservatives. In this article I try to examine how in Kim Jaejoon's political thought liberalism, nationalism, conservatism and radicalism converge and/or diverge, and consequently what peculiarity was formed in his democratic thought. I hope that through this study we can have a better understanding on contemporary Korean political thought.
