개인주의적 영성운동과 세속화 논쟁 = Individual Spirituality Movement and Secularization Debate

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims at studying the relations between the individual spirituality movement and secularization, and clarifying their characteristics from the mutual perspective. If we view secularization as the privatization of religion, then we may say with certainty that the individual spirituality movement should be included in the category of secularization. Those who joined in debate over secularization used to underestimate the movement as peripheral and insignificant, but recently spirituality has gained wide publicity even as a term substituting religion. Such phenomena may leave room to be interpreted as the change from secularization to desecularization meaning the revival of religion. Moreover the individual spirituality movement, passing beyond the individual exploration of spiritualty, appears to attempt the ecological movement on the one hand and share sociality and popularity through spirituality market on the other hand. This research concludes that secularization can be conceived as an epoch-making historical event of religious transformation withdrawn to the private sphere of self from the traditional religious culture as well as a continuous process bringing another transformation.
