뉴스 미디어가 재현하는 범죄현실: 아동대상 성폭력 범죄의 프레이밍 = News Representation of Crime: the Case of Sexual Violence against Children

This study analyzed how news media frame sexual violence against children. The study selected two most high-profile incidents where the victims are brutally raped or raped and killed. Conservative Chosun Ilbo and more liberal Hangyoreo Shin Mun were chosen for frame analysis. The result shows that the media define both of the incidents largely in the narrow terrain of law-and-order frame. Media coverage also Focus intensively on the deviance of the criminals labelling one of them as psychopath without particular evidences to prove it. The meanings of both crime cases are framed around the judgement about the performance of police and prosecutors` office. As a consequence, the responsibility and legitimacy of solving sexual crime against children reside in the power of law enforcement agencies. This result in the exclusion of more structural causes and solutions as appropriate measures. Another distinctive tendency in the framing of sexual crime against children is moral panic that massively highlights the deviance of criminals is taking place. Behaviors that would be regarded as normal when it is done by ordinary citizens are described as cunning, intelligent and impudent when they are done by the criminals. The framing strategy that somehow overemphasize the deviancy of criminals may result in the reinforcement of public perception that sexual criminals are psychopathic strangers who are totally different from ordinary citizens when in fact most of sexual crimes are committed by members of family and relatives.
