다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The present article seeks to provide insights into relevant trends on the legal problems of migration and nationality, and identify prescriptive possibilities for further study and examination. Migration, as old as humanity, might be called one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. As with other aspects of globalization, including trade, capital flows, and media, it gives rise to immense anxieties.
Korea, hitherto known for her homogeneity of national membership, is also faced with the growing concern over the immigrants numbering well over one million. Yet one has to note that the explosive increase in labor migrants is largely a culmination of structural changes on the industrial sectors of Korea. In other words, the Korean society has contributed to migrant flows, for which it should share in some form or another responsibility for integrating settled migrants rather than disparaging them as 'unwanted aliens'. It is in this perspective that the multicultural integration emerges on the key national agenda.
By and large sovereignty and nationality/citizenship have been two generic principles of the nation-state before the emerging massive immigration poses challenges and revisions on the traditional tenets governing them. The United States, the most representative immigration nation, and Germany, the self-proclaimed zero-immigration state, respectively have exhibited over the past two decades dramatic changes in both law and policy. Which of the aforementioned option models Korea would pursue is yet to be seen.
