The interest and concern on social network interorganization and intraorganization of employees have been increasing highly. The reason for increasing concern on the organization of social network of their employees is that it can provide an individual with useful information about opportunities and choices otherwise not available, may exert influence on the agents who play a critical role in decisions, and may be conceived by the organization or its agents as certifications of the individual`s social credentials. The belief on social network of employees giving advantages on jobs and careers has been generally accepted but the experimental research has not been widely examined. Furthermore, most of the previous researches on social network focused on the characteristics of social network, the method of its measurements, and its effects on organizational performance and individual careers. Only a few studies shed light on the process in which social network influenced on organizational performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the characteristics of social network such as size, range, and strength may directly affect on career success like employability and promotaility or there may exist a mediate variable between them. Almost social network researchers agreed that the first of social capital`s direct benefits is information. Therefore, this study presumed the access to information as a mediate variable and examined its mediating effect on the relationship between social network and career success. To achieve purpose of the research, data were collected in large Korean companies with more than 300 employees. In order to test the hypotheses, 533 samples were analyzed with multiple regression analysis and Sobel test. As the result of the study, it has been examined that access to information mediates perfectly or partially between the characteristics of social network and career success. The results are as follows: First, it was analyzed that access to information mediates perfectly between network size and employability. That is, network size had effects on employability not directly but through access to information. Second, it was investigated that access to information mediates perfectly between network range and employability. Third, it was revealed that access to information mediates perfectly between network strength and employability. Fourth, it was examined that access to information mediates partially between network size and promotability. In other words, network size had directly effects on promotability and also affect indirectly through access to information. Fifth, it was found that access to information mediates partially between network range and promotability. Sixth, it was studied that access to information mediates partially between network strength and promotability. These results imply that research models on social network should be designed more elaborately taking into account of mediating or other variables.
