The Korean language curriculum for elementary though high school consists of grammar, skills and literature. The curriculum for grammar education consists of pronunciation, orthography, vocabulary, parts of speech, constituents of sentence, punctuation and style according to school grade.
Korea has nearly universal literacy and access to education is guaranteed by law. But Korean school teachers do not teach rules of orthography and grammar systematically. The teaching of Korean grammar and orthography is lacking in many ways: non-systematic curriculum, fragmentary grammar testing, ineffective teaching methods, non-systematic organization of grammar contents, outdated language policy, abandonment of Chinese characters.
Teaching of orthography and grammar have been neglected for at least 30 years in Korean schools, and we need to revise the old unplanned curriculum and teaching approaches, particularly at the elementary school level. Students need knowledge of skills for reading, writing, speech, and knowledge of linguistic and literary structures for understanding language and literature. They also need to know topical knowledge that combines a world view with a sense of patriotism
